Hi and welcome, I’m Ruth Chapman. I live in Ridgefield, CT and spend a lot of time on Nantucket.

I love how peaceful and connected I feel in nature. The blazing yellow of a little goldfinch, the shape of a tulip just opening, the feathery leaves of a fern, the grainy texture of the sand. Juicy color combinations, interesting textures and patterns, simple shapes and lines, that’s what I focus on, what I’m grateful for, what I bring to my art.

For my mixed media artworks, I print papers in acrylic using a gel plate and other printmaking tools. My creative outlet as a child was sewing, and those skills of designing, cutting, and assembling fabrics inform how I create now. I love combining the serendipity and spontaneity of the printmaking process with the planning and detail work of making a collage.

As I work, I consider each object by itself, how it relates to the others, and how it contributes to the whole. These concepts are meaningful in life as well: individuality, harmony, and unity.
